Summary

Better Auth is a full, actively shipped open-source auth framework with a documented plugin ecosystem, a paid infrastructure tier, and institutional backing (YC, a $5M seed, then joining Vercel). It sits far above the local bar for product depth and commitment. The one gap is that the dossier shows no direct evidence of paying customers or a payment provider, so revenue is unproven here.

Breakdown

Vercel bought it in Jul 2026, which is why it gets full marks ( the announcement ). The five measures below are how it scored on its own.

Viability

Is there a real problem, someone who would pay, and a market this builder can actually reach?

A real, widely felt problem (self-hosted auth versus managed services) with a credible, published commercial model. The pricing page lists Starter, Pro and Enterprise tiers for managed infrastructure, but the dossier has no first-hand evidence of paying customers.

80/100

Rubric 61–80People use it and pay (or clearly would), and the model fits the local market: how people pay, what they can afford, the language they use.

  1. Pricing page lists Free, $20/month Pro with usage-based add-ons, and Enterprise tiers for the managed infrastructure.

  2. A $5M seed round led by PeakXV shows investors believe in the commercial model.

“I'm happy to announce Better Auth has raised a $5M seed led by PeakXV Partners (formerly Sequoia Capital India & SEA), with participation from Y Combinator, Chapter One, P1 Ventures, and a group of incredible investors and angels Thanks everyone for your support and for being a part of this journey! https://www.better-auth.com/blog/seed-round”

  3. Positions the library in the gap between NextAuth and managed providers like Clerk and Auth0, a clearly stated user need.

“Just to clarify, Better Auth wasn’t created to be just another auth library/services that handles user logins. I think that problem’s mostly solved already. Better Auth was built to fill the gap between something like NextAuth and a third-party provider like Clerk or Auth0. It lets you do a lot more with your auth server so you don’t have to reinvent the wheel. things like properly managing user s”

  4. Joining Vercel suggests strategic value, though it does not itself show revenue.

“Better Auth is joining Vercel! Thank you everyone who has been part of this journey in so many different ways 🙏 More to come! Excited for what’s ahead ❤️”

Moat

What stops someone copying it?

Owned distribution and a compounding ecosystem (50+ plugins, many framework integrations, Auth.js joining, partner plugins) make this hard to copy. Auth is also a trust-heavy domain where the security work is hard to replicate. It is not yet defended on several fronts, since the library is open source (MIT) and a funded competitor could fork it.

74/100

Rubric 61–80Something compounding: proprietary data, network effects, owned distribution, or hard technology.

Receipts (4)
  1. Auth.js (formerly NextAuth) joining Better Auth consolidates the ecosystem under it.

  2. A Polar-built plugin and partnership extends the plugin ecosystem beyond the core team.

“Polar team just released a plugin for Better Auth ;) this is going to be the start of an exciting partnership with them 🖤”

    Post · @bekacru_c · 4 Mar 2025 · open on Telegram (opens in a new tab)

  3. The site lists 50+ plugins, 20+ framework integrations, SAML, SCIM and MCP/agent auth, which is substantial depth to copy.

  4. An MIT-licensed repo with 30 recent releases shows a fast-moving codebase that is hard to catch up with.

Momentum

Did the updates keep coming?

Worked on for 30 months with updates in 21 of them. Near-daily commits and about 30 releases between June and October 2026 show a steady, sustained shipping cadence.

Infrastructure

Does a real, working product exist?

A full, working framework with a CLI, docs, a large plugin set, and a managed dashboard and infrastructure tier. The demo site returned a 500 and the beta docs page showed only a sign-in screen when checked, which are minor blemishes.

Sustainability

Is it being set up to last?

Owned distribution through open source, a published pricing model, a $5M seed, and the Vercel deal give it strong footing. The gap is that the dossier shows no paying customers or payment provider, so revenue itself is unproven.

  • Distribution25/30

A web app on its own domain.

  • Payments0/15

    No payment provider found.

  • Pricing10/10

A pricing page or stated prices on the site.

  • Revenue0/5

The creator's posts never state paying customers or revenue. A pricing page and a seed round exist, but neither is evidence of customers paying.

  • Privacy policy7/7

    Has a privacy policy.

  • Terms5/5

    Has terms of service.

  • Support8/8

    A way to reach support.

  • Commitment20/20

Right now, we're on 0.2, and this Friday we’ll move to 0.3. This will continue for the next 7 weeks, so we should reach v1 by then. I'll post the roadmap for v1 soon!”
